$70,433 Raised for York County Veterans at the 6th Annual Benefit Custom Car and Bike Show

Updated: Jun 12, 2023

Our Biggest Car Show Yet with $70 ,433.46 netted for the York County Veterans Outreach at this year's Custom Car & Bike Show! The York County Veterans Outreach would like to thank everyone who participated in making the 6th Annual Benefit Custom Car & Bike Show a success from our car show committee members who spent months working behind the scenes planning out this family friendly event, our day-of volunteers who kept everything running smoothly, our generous sponsors and all our car enthusiasts who never fail to bring out the coolest custom bikes and cars you can imagine. Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill interviewed our Grand Marshal 100-year-old WWII veteran Harold Sandy Harper following local racing legends Mike Dunn, Lynn Paxton and Bruce Larson who shared stories from their racing days. Our enthusiasts enjoyed free coffee and donuts, sno-cones and more alongside live music from The Highway Boys. We had a great selection of silent auction items, 7 featured cars and unveiled a custom 1969 Camaro Convertible. We would like to give a special acknowledgement to the Church of the Open Door for hosting the car show well as our two event sponsors The Center for Dental Excellence Gordon Bell Associates and York Excavating. Please patron and support all our sponsors below, we could not run this event without them!

About our 2023 Grand Marshall Harold "Sandy" Harper

Harold ‘Sandy’ Harper was born on August 11, 1922. He enlisted in the navy in 1942 and left his hometown of Beaver, Pennsylvania. During World War II, Sandy was a nose gunner in a PBY-Catalina patrol bomber in the South Pacific. He was part of VP-81, Black Cats, Polar Bear Squadron and was assigned to the USS Montpelier. During his time in the Pacific, he and his crew were shot down and floated on the wreckage of their plane for three days. Fortunately, an American ship appeared on the horizon and came to their rescue.

After World War II, Sandy was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and served on the USS Everglades. He left the Navy as a Petty Officer 1st Class in January of 1955. After transitioning to civilian life, Sandy worked for Diebold as a bank lock smith. He and his family would move to York, PA in the early 1960s where Sandy would open his own company, Central Vault Services. Sandy retired from his own business at the age of 87.

Sandy still resides in York County and celebrated his 100th birthday in August of last year. He and his late-wife, Catherine, are the parents of two daughters and have five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In his free time, Sandy is an avid golfer and a diehard Pittsburgh sports fan.
