York Gold Star 5k, Gold Star Garden Commemoration Ceremony & the York County Wreath Laying Ceremony

We were honored to attend three Memorial Day ceremonies in York County this morning - the York Gold Star 5k, the annual Gold Star Garden Commemoration Ceremony, and the York County Wreath Laying Ceremony.

During the Gold Star Garden ceremony, the names of five Pennsylvania servicemen who paid the ultimate price were unveiled. Two of those heroes have close ties to York County - Staff Seargents Benjamin Hines and Christopher Slutman.

The County Wreath Laying Ceremony was held in Penn Park, along with the dedication of the park’s flagpole in honor of Staff Sergeant Calvin C. Rice, Jr., who received four awards for valor while in the Army in Vietnam before his death in 1969. His selfless deeds and legacy will forever be memorialized by this dedication.

The York County Veterans Outreach had the honor and privilege of supporting all of today’s events by being a sponsor of the Gold Star 5k, a continual supporter of the Gold Star Memorial Garden, and providing the bronze plaque which recognizes the life, service, and sacrifice of Staff Sergeant Calvin Rice Jr.

We wish to express our sincere respect and appreciation to all servicemen and women who laid down their lives in defense of our Nation’s freedoms, and their families who have lost so much. We thank you all for your sacrifices.
